Most of the wolfberries that people consume and use medicinally are the fruit of Ningxia wolfberry (Lycium barbarum L.), and Ningxia wolfberry is the only species included in the 2010 edition of the Chinese Pharmacopoeia. Ningxia wolfberry (Lycium barbarum L.) has the largest cultivation area in China, mainly in the northwest of China. It is mainly grows in Ningxia province with a small amount of cultivation in Gansu. The common varieties in other regions are Chinese wolfberry and its variants. The dried ripe fruit of the Ningxia wolfberry is oval or fusiform shape, slightly flattened, 1.5-2 cm long and 4-8 mm in diameter. Surface bright red to dark red with irregularly wrinkled and slightly glossy, with a white stalk mark at one end. There are many yellow seeds inside, odorless, sweet taste. When chewing it, the saliva dyed to red and yellow color.
